In 1784 AD the Royal Asiatic Society was formed in Calcutta by a group of --huslastic scholars, including Sir William Jones amongst others. The major purpose of this association was to promote the study of the history, antiquities, arts, sciences and literatures of Asia.
1837 AD James Princep deciphered the Brahmi script, and so helped Indian -chaeology to free itself from purely antiquarian and literary affiliations. A. Cunningham organized a country-wide exploration of the archaeological remains in India He followed the descriptions of Chinese pilgrims Fa-hsien and Yuan Chwang id relocated many Buddhist places they had visited. During that period, however, the existing administration in Nepal did not allow foreigners to explore areas of cultural or archaeological interest in the Nepalese Terai. Archaeologists perforce focused mainly on Indian sites. Lumbini, in fact calculated to have been situated in her Gorakhpur or Basti district of Uttar Pradesh in India.
